Ceramic solutions for maximum performance
Engineering Ceramic competence area in Hall 5
Engineering ceramics are drivers of innovation in practically all areas of industry, including medical technology, automobile manufacturing and industrial automation. Which is why the Engineering Ceramics competence area will have pride of place in Hall 5 at Subcontracting 2009?
Themed “think ceramics”, the area features two group pavilions where manufacturers of engineering ceramics and providers of components and processes will be showcasing their latest products and developments. This ceramics meeting point is organized by the German Ceramics Industry Association (VKI) and Technologie Agentur Struktur Keramik TASK GmbH.
“No other event brings together so many ceramics specialists in on place. The exhibitors will be profiling the amazing possibilities and enormous range of current and future applications of engineering ceramics”, VKI spokesman Martin Hartmann explains. At the VKI pavilion big-name providers will be showcasing best practice solutions for the multifunctional use of highly miniaturized components made of high-performance materials.
The displays will show how plastic and metal components can be combines to form single units.
Ceramic coatings enhance material efficiency
Industrial companies are coming under pressure to reduce costs as input materials like aluminium and highly alloyed steels become increasingly expensive. Engineering ceramics have a key part to play in this. Ceramic coatings as thin as 100 my can provide effective wear protection for functional surfaces of machine parts made of steel and aluminium increasing their service life several fold.
Ceramic coatings have porous lamellar microstructures that can be sealed using nanocomposites to prevent the penetration of corrosive media. The lamellar structure makes the ceramic layer highly resistant to impact and thermal shock.
From design to system testing
The big decisions have already been made regarding some of the themes that will be covered by the displays of ceramic multifunctional components and components for measuring and automation systems at the TASK pavilion. Michael Zins of the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems – which is organizing the pavilion – explains: “The exhibitors will be profiling the entire spectrum, from design to system testing. Potential customers visiting the fair will be able to view the entire development chain.” The exhibits will range form initial functional prototypes to the large-scale production of ceramic components for automobiles, including the necessary capital equipment.
